When Your Foot Slips

Daily Devotional – Friday, July 13, 2023
If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up.
Psalm 94:18 (NKJV)

When your foot slips while you are climbing a mountain, you risk falling deep down a gorge and dying instantly. This explains the many bodies found along the various paths to the summit of Mount Everest. These daring mountaineers had no one to yank them to safety in their hour of greatest need.

I am Falling

The writer of the ninety-forth psalm may not have been a mountain climber but he knew what it meant to slip in life. He stated, “If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up.” (Psalm 94:18). What a powerful prayer!

Enemies, who oppress the righteous, and appear to succeed, surround the psalmist. The murderous lot even boast that the God of Israel neither sees nor understands. The writer of this psalm appears to fear that he might slip because of his frustration with the evildoers, temptation to sin or an attack by the foe.

You Will Hold Me Up

Like a mountaineer scaling the most treacherous path, the psalmist appears to slip, and immediately reaches out and cries to God. His hand is stretched out to the Almighty because only God can save this adventurer from imminent death.

To get help, we must realize and acknowledge our deficiencies and needs, and then express our desire for God’s help. When we cultivate a deep yearning for divine help, God intervenes. Because He is merciful, because He understand our frailties and propensity to sin, God reaches out and holds us up.

When Your Foot Slips

Which slippery spiritual and physical mountains are you climbing today? Do you realize that without divine intervention you can easily slip and abandon your faith in God? Lean on God. When your foot slips, shout for help and He will hold you up.

Prayer
Merciful Father, when my foot slips and I call on You, extend your mercy to me and hold me up.
