How God’s Enduring Favour Obscures His Momentary Anger

Daily Devotional – Sunday, July 23, 2023
For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
Psalms 30:5 (NKJV)

My mother was an exceptionally patient person but on this day, we had crossed the red line. My older brother and I received the worst lashing ever for breaking some of her household items. So angry was she that she sent us out of the house into the darkness of that early night.

A Moment of Anger

We ran and hid in a nearby bushy plot of land nearby. We could hear her from a distance complaining bitterly about our actions. Soon after, we heard her shutting the door. Our fate was sealed. We now had to face the bitter cold, mosquitos, stray dogs and mad people on our own.

About one hour later, we heard mother open the door. Then she started walking towards our hiding place while muttering, “Where are these children now? God, protect them from danger. Bring them back to me.” My heart melted with joy but I stayed put because I thought she was setting a trap for us

His Favor is For Life

Only when she desperately shouted our names several times did we venture out into her warm and welcoming embrace. She ensured we took a warm bath and ate a hot meal before she prayed with us and tucked us into bed. When we woke up in the morning, her anger was gone. The storm was over and we rejoiced.

I recalled this event when I read Psalms 30:5, which states, “For His anger is but for a moment; His favor is for life. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Here, David contrasts God’s momentary anger with His lifetime favour. He praises God for not holding on to anger forever despite the waywardness of human beings.

How God’s Enduring Favour Obscures His Momentary Anger

I see some characteristics of my mother in God. The LORD is like a Parent who withholds blessings and allows trials to assail His children when they make wrong choices. This He does, not because He is sadistic but owing to His immense love for us. Consequently, when He is satisfied we have learned our lessons, He lovingly welcomes us back home.

That is how God’s enduring favour obscures his momentary anger. Today, if you are suffering because of your sins, remember God is ready to forgive you. Yes, you made Him angry because of mistakes but He is willing to forgive and restore you if you repent and confess your sins. He will turn your night of guilt and sorrow into a morning of forgiveness and joy. What are you waiting for?

Prayer
Thank You God because You do not remain angry forever. Because of Your unending favour, forgive my sins and restore my joy.

Amen!
Indeed a divine reassurance..
We can always come back to God knowing He’s more loving and patient with us than He is angry.
A wonderful promise and Appeal..Jeremiah 3:12
