But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 (NKJV)
Four years had passed since Faith had left home. During that period, she had fallen from the lofty stature of a respected Christian girl to a promiscuous drug addict. As she slid into delinquency, many people wondered whether anyone would love this unlovable woman.
Jesus Loves Undeserving Sinners
Faith had lost the love of her family. The church had abandoned her, describing her as a bad influence on the rest of the youth. Now she was alone. Even her closest friends had forsaken her. She had no money and had no hope of finding a decent job, having dropped out of college in pursuit of pleasure.
That night, on the table in the small room she occupied, was a bottle of rat poison. She wanted to end it all. As she began to write her suicide note, a familiar song from her childhood invaded her thoughts.
Jesus loves me, this I know;
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong.
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus Loves Me
Instinctively, Faith sang the refrain loudly, tears welling from her eyes.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
As the love of God overwhelmed Faith, she remembered her favourite Bible verse. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). She was a despicable sinner. Everyone had abandoned her. Only God was left on her side. That is all that mattered.
Jesus Specializes in Loving the Unlovable
Faith took refuge in God’s unconditional love. She went on her knees and asked for forgiveness. God forgave her and filled her with peace that defied understanding. For the first time in many years, she had a restful night, the burden of guilt no longer weighing on her.
Like Faith, if sin and guilt are weighing on you, remember that God loved and died for you while you were yet a sinner. He is ready to forgive and restore you because you will never be so sinful that God cannot save you. Return to God today, for unlike human beings, He specializes in loving the unlovable.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for loving and forgiving an unlovable person like me.
