Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
Psalms 32:1 (NKJV)
I recently watched a documentary of a former criminal whom the state had pardoned and released from prison. He was overjoyed and grateful to the government and the victims of his crimes, for the unconditional forgiveness they had granted him. Such is the joy of being forgiven, especially when you know you are guilty and underserving of pardon.
Blessed is He Whose Transgression is Forgiven
This prisoner reminded me of a time I wronged an older friend and remained in his bad books for months. Whenever I saw him coming, I would take a detour because of my sense of shame. One day, though, we met at a place where I could not hide or escape. I swallowed my pride and asked for forgiveness. The words “I have forgiven” you were the sweetest music to my ears.
Psalms 32:1 encapsulates the essence of this story when it states, “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalms 32:1-2). The word blessed also means ‘happy’. In essence, the forgiven human being is the happiest one.
The Joy of Being Forgiven
Conversely, “When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night, Your hand was heavy upon me. My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.” (Psalms 32:3-4). In essence, guilt is a negative, consuming emotion that gradually eats into the conscience, causes physical, psychological, and emotional pain, and steals joy from its victims.
Now, since unforgiven sin and guilt are detrimental to a human being and receiving forgiveness produces joy, why hold on to sin? Confess your transgressions to God, for He is ready to pardon you. Moreover, ask those you have wronged to forgive you. You will experience the indescribable joy of being forgiven.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You because I am experiencing the joy of being forgiven.
