What is the Meaning of Life?

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.

What is the meaning of life? Why am I alive? Does God care? How well does He know me? These questions often plague the minds of human beings every day. Finding the answers to these questions often determines the quality and relevance of one’s life.

Created for a Purpose

Whenever a person becomes suicidal or takes his or her own life, there is a high likelihood that he or she has lost the meaning of life. Such a person may have concluded that no one cares about them, not even God.

If you ever reach a point where you doubt whether you have any significant role to play in life, take a moment to read and meditate on the first chapter of the book of Jeremiah. Here, God reveals to us our beginnings and mission in life.

Before I Formed You, I Knew You

God called Jeremiah to be a prophet at a time when the Kingdom of Judah was in decline. This seer had the unenviable responsibility of announcing that Judah would go into Babylonian exile for rebelling against God. At the beginning, Jeremiah was a reluctant messenger.

God approached Jeremiah with an unusual announcement, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5).

The Essence of Life

What profound knowledge did God have of Jeremiah? We often talk of life beginning at conception, but here God reveals that in the spiritual world, we exist even before our parents become intimate! You are not a mistake but a perfect fit in God’s plans.

Further, God ordains us for specific roles in life long before we are born. Jeremiah did not come to earth by mistake. God brought him here to accomplish a noble mission, that of being a prophet. What a life changing thought! That is what every child of God is!

What is the Meaning of Life?

We find the significance of life in understanding our origin, purpose, and destiny in God. When you realize you are not just another statistic; that you belong to the Almighty God; that He created you for a purpose, you begin to appreciate yourself more than before.

What is the meaning of life? It is to be purposeful, confident, and joyful. It implies influencing those around you positively and becoming a blessing to them. Living with meaning means giving your best to your vocation and work. It means responding to God’s immeasurable love with undivided attention.
