The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian
Genesis 39:2 (NKJV)
Are you successful? Who is a successful person, in your opinion? The conventional image is that of a person with a lot of money, an expensive house, and the latest car model. At a personal level, a successful person lives lavishly, dresses elegantly, and uses the most sophisticated electronic gadgets.
Conventional Prosperity
Indeed, people who do not fit most of these criteria are technically poor. In other words, prosperity is essentially monetary and material. Consequently, the rich are easily recognized and honoured in society. They occupy powerful positions in the business, political, and religious spheres.
The Bible has many examples of people who were wealthy and prosperous. They include Abraham, David, and Solomon. These individuals owned large herds of domestic animals, silver, and gold. They were also powerful in society, with strong militias at their disposal.
A Thriving Slave?
Now, did you know the Bible also talks about people who were successful but had no material wealth? Here is one of them: “The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.” (Genesis 39:2).
Do you realize that, at this point, Joseph was a slave in the house of Potiphar, Pharaoh’s servant? Jacob’s other sons had sold their sibling into slavery, and Joseph was technically separated from his family forever. How, then, could Joseph be a successful man?
Are You Successful?
His success was due to his fidelity to God and divine principles. Potiphar entrusted everything to Joseph because the latter was honest and hardworking. Joseph was not rich materially, but God was with him. No earthly wealth surpasses the peace and contentment of knowing God is on your side.
Are you successful? If you are hardworking, honest, and committed, and you trust God with and in everything, you are prosperous. Do not allow your negative circumstances to discourage you. As the later experiences of Joseph reveal, God is using your current circumstances to prepare you for greater responsibilities in the future.
