Therefore, with joy, you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
Isaiah 12:3 (NKJV)
I have notice that in my community, there is a general lack of joy, especially since the advent of COVID-19. It is as if there is an epidemic of sadness. The general decline in the economy on a global scale has worsened the situation. Today, it dawned on me that I have become part of the lamentation party. As a believer, this question now lingers on my mind, “Where is your joy?”
A Hopeless Existence
Granted, the situation around me instigates despondency. Almost everyone I meet expresses dissatisfaction with one aspect of life or the other. If it is not lack of money and the high cost of living, it is illness in the family or the loss of a loved one. Often, I find myself agreeing with those who say things are not good and the situation is likely to get worse in the coming days.
The Holy Spirit, though, keeps reminding me that where He is, there is joy. (Galatians 5:22-23). Why, then, do I allow circumstances to overwhelm me? Why is my mouth filled with pessimism instead of hope in God? How different am I from a person who does not have a personal relationship with Jesus?
With Joy You Will Draw Water From the Wells of Salvation
I realize I must face up to the challenge Prophet Isaiah presents when he writes, “Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” (Isaiah 12:3). According to this verse, I cannot claim to be saved yet lead a joyless and hopeless life. Salvation is enjoyable. Having an active relationship with Jesus is a source of joy, irrespective of what is happening around me.
Christians need to spread joy in their homes, workplaces, schools, churches and wherever they find themselves. Because we know God loves us and He is in control, we will remain happy and optimistic. Since we truth the promises of our God who cannot lie, we will encourage the people around us to trust in God.
Where is Your Joy?
When we contemplate the finished work of the cross, we cannot afford to be gloomy because or salvation is sure and our joy is full. As we look forward to the coming of Jesus, we will take pride in spreading hope for today and for tomorrow. Our joy will be palpable, the poor economy notwithstanding.
In a world where news means disaster and death; where people naturally anticipate trouble, are you an agent of joy and hope? How different are you from the world now that the Holy Spirit lives in you? The world looks up to you for good news that makes a difference. Jesus expects you to spread the joyful news of His kingdom. Where is your joy?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, fill me with the joy of salvation that I may live productively despite the challenges I face, and, eventually, inherit eternal life.
