And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
Genesis 12:7 (NKJV)
One of the reasons people raise flags is to signify who a territory belongs to. Moreover, when a nation conquers another, the victor raises its flag in the latter to symbolize dominance. In similar fashion, believers must learn to raise God’s flag high wherever they go.
Hoist Jehovah’s Banner
Abram did it and left us with a good example. After God had instructed him to leave his people and country, Abram journeyed to Canaan. Then the Lord appeared to his servant and promised to give the land of Canaan to the latter’s descendants.
How did Abram react to this promise? “And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.” (Genesis 12:7). In the presence of the Canaanites, Abram established the worship of Jehovah. He raised the Lord’s flag high, signifying that that territory now belonged to the worshipers of the true God.
Lifting the Lord’s Standard High
Notice that this was not a one-off activity. “And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.” (Genesis 12:8). The best way Abram could mark the territory God had given him was to populate it with altars.
Wherever Abram lived, people would see him conducting morning and evening worship for his family and servants by giving a burnt offering to the Almighty. It is possible that some of the idol-worshipping Canaanites abandoned their false gods and followed Jehovah, thanks to the example set by Abram.
Raise God’s Flag High
God wants you to be the modern-day Abram. Wherever you go, live, work, or study, let people know, through your genuine piety, that He is the only true God. Always present yourself as a child of God who is not ashamed of the gospel. Raise God’s flag high and let everyone know that God owns you and everything you possess.
Prayer
Dear God, I will raise Your flag high wherever I go so that people may know and submit to You because of my godly example.
