O The Privilege of Being Mentioned in Prayer

Daily Devotional – Sunday, November 5, 2023
We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.
1 Thessalonians 1:2 (NKJV)

May late mother was a prayer warrior, the best player role model I could ever have. I loved it, especially when she mentioned my name during family prayer sessions. Even while supplicating in private, she would mention all her children by name. I think she prayed audibly to make sure we heard her intercede for us before God.

Making Mention of You in Our Prayers

Today, I enjoy hearing my family members state my name while communicating with God. It is encouraging to hear them tell God to bless me and meet my specific needs. My heart wells with joy as I feel the love and warmth of knowing someone is praying for me. I believe my kin feel the same way when I pray for them by name.

The Christians in Thessalonica must have been equally thrilled to read Paul’s words, “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2). Paul cared deeply about the Thessalonians, to the point of mentioning them in his prayers. He thanked God for these believers’ commitment to the faith.

O The Privilege of Being Mentioned in Prayer

Jesus did the same with Simon when he told the overconfident disciple, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith should not fail, and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” (Luke 22:31-32)

O the privilege of being mentioned in prayer by Jesus! Yet the honor is ours, too. God says, “I have called you by your name. You are Mine.”( Isaiah 43:1). Yes, God mentions you by name because you are His special possession. Apart from Jesus, your family and friends have made it a custom to pray for you by name. Today, create a list of people you will mention in your prayers so that God may bless them abundantly.

Prayer
Thank You, Jesus, because You know me by name and my name is ever on Your lips.
