Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalms 119:105 (NKJV)
Nights in the ancient world must have been extremely dark compared to modern society. There were no street lights or floodlights to pierce the darkness. Small lamps made from baked clay illuminated houses.
Illuminate Your Footpath
Moreover, if you walked in the dark, you would need a lamp or torch to light up the area around your feet. Without such a light, you would hit your feet on rocks and other barriers. You would also be at risk from scorpions, snakes, and other predators. Your journey would be one to regret.
David was referring to such a scenario when he wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalms 119:105). To the psalmist, the Word of God plays a role in his life, similar to a lamp on a dark night. Scripture provides spiritual enlightenment and shields him from the enemy’s snares.
Walk in the Light
Although we live in a world that has enough physical light, we have have to deal with spiritual darkness. Like the psalmist, we need to ask God to guide our lives amidst the difficulties and doubts we encounter.
God does this through His Word which is the light that shines on our path as we journey home. If we walk in darkness and find ourselves trapped and wounded by sin, it is because we have ignored the word of God and its guidance and wisdom.
How Bright is Your Path?
Through the Bible, God separates truth from error and directs us in paths of righteousness. The more we listen to His voice and follow His instructions, the safer we are from the devil’s snares.
How bright is your path as your journey home? If you are a regular and organized reader of the Word of God, and if you practice its teachings, you are walking in the light. Get your lamp today and never walk in darkness again.
Prayer
