But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Hebrews 13:16 (NKJV)
Christianity traces its roots to Judaism. In the latter, the sacrificial system played a critical role in making peace between God and man. God required that a person who sinned slaughter a prescribed animal as a sacrifice in order to be forgiven.
A Sweet Aroma
People also offered sacrifices when sealing a covenant with God. For example, when Noah came out of the ark, he offered a sacrifice to God. The Bible describes the sacrifice as a soothing aroma that made God vow never to destroy the earth with flood waters again.
Jesus would later become the ultimate sacrifice when He died on the cross for our sins. No longer do we need to slaughter animals to atone for our sins. Instead, we now have to offer different kinds of sacrifices to demonstrate our love and commitment to Jesus.
God is Pleased With Such Sacrifices
The Apostle Paul identifies two such sacrifices when he writes, “But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” (Hebrews 13:16). Like the sweet aroma from Noah’s sacrifice, so are our acts of kindness and benevolence. When people praise God for using us to bless them, God is well pleased with us.
If indeed you appreciate Christ’s sacrifice on your behalf, you will extend a helping hand to those who are sick, poor, orphaned, widowed, bereaved, imprisoned, and others who need assistance and encouragement. Your life and character will radiate God’s love. People will see Jesus in action in you and be attracted to Him.
The Sacrifices that Please God
No Christian is so poor that he cannot offer the sacrifices that please God. Allow the love of God to always control you. Accept to be the channel through which God blesses people. If you cooperate with God in this sense, your works of compassion and generosity will be a pleasing fragrance to God.
Prayer
Dear God, always remind me to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices You are well pleased.
