And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”
Colossians 4:17 (NKJV)
Archippus was a fellow minister with Paul in the early church (read Philemon 1:2). Some scholars believe Archippus was Philemon’s son. Church tradition asserts that he later became a bishop of the church in Laodicea. What cannot be disputed, however, is that he had an important ministry in the church at Colossae.
Complete Your Ministry
It appears that at some point, Archippus began to slacken in his ministry. Perhaps it was because of old age, sickness, general lethargy, or a lack of zeal. To make sure this man of God continued serving the Lord, Paul commanded the Colossians to tell Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.” (Colossians 4:17).
Notice that it is God who has given Archippus the ministry, though we are not sure of its nature. Secondly, he is supposed to carry out the purpose for which God has called him. Thirdly, he is to be careful to return to his calling. In essence, God’s church was poorer because of the man’s negligence in his calling.
Fulfill Your Purpose
Like Archippus, God has called all of us to perform specific roles in the church and in life. Often, we allow the cares of this world—fear, laziness, carelessness, and the love of the world—to distract and derail us from what God has called us to do. We deny fellow Christians and the rest of the world the blessings God has placed in our hands on His behalf.
What is your mission for the people of God and on earth in general? “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.” As God’s steward, strive to be efficient and effective in your ministry. The world and the church will be richer and more habitable if you play your role effectively.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me new impetus to fulfill my purpose in Your church and on earth.
