Is Your Mouth a Fountain of Life?

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, November 22, 2023
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life…
Proverbs 10:11 (NKJV)

People who live in places with plenty of water may not appreciate fountains. In contrast, those who live in dry areas where water is scarce have a special regard for wells. Indeed, springs are sources of life for human beings, animals, and plants. Do you know that your mouth can also be a fountain of life?

A Well of Life

That is what Solomon teaches in Proverbs 10:11 when he writes, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life.” The mouth in this case refers to words or speech. In essence, people who have given their lives to Jesus and are living according to God’s will engage in wholesome communication.

They sow hope where there is none. Their speech tends towards peace, thus diffusing strife among fellow human beings. With their words, they make other people feel respected. Such believers utter words of wisdom. Their words have a positive impact long after they are spoken. They know when to speak and when to keep quiet.

A Spring of Life

If you asked such Christians, they would tell you their secret lies in what they feed their minds on. Your mouth cannot become a fountain of life if you are not feeding on the person about whom David wrote, “For with you is the fountain of life.” (Psalms 36:9). Only by walking daily with God and interacting with Him can your mouth produce wholesome speech.

Our speech is a product of what we feed our minds. If we read the word of God and meditate on it every day, we will gradually become like Christ, and our speech will exemplify this union. The mind that dwells on pure, excellent, true, praiseworthy, and noble content will bless the people who listen to its speech.

Is Your Mouth a Fountain of Life?

Is your mouth a fountain of life? Can those who live and interact with you daily attest that you are righteous, judging from your manner of speech? Do your words encourage, nourish, and bless your hearers? Which changes will you make in your life today to ensure your words become a life-giving spring?

Prayer
Almighty Father, dwell in my heart that my mouth may become a fountain of life for everyone I interact with.
