Your Mental Health Matters

Daily Devotional – Thursday, December 7, 2023
The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?
Proverbs 18:14 (NKJV)

According to some medical practitioners, the majority of the illnesses we suffer have their origins in the mind. If you believe you are sick, even if you are in good health, you will begin to feel sick. On the other hand, if you are unwell and convince yourself that you will get well, chances are you will recover quickly.

Guard Your Mind

Your brain is a very powerful organ. That is why King Solomon stated, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23). Our thoughts determine our decisions, which in turn define our destiny. In addition, there is a close connection between your mental attitude and your physical health.

The latter concept is the subject of Proverbs 18:14, where Solomon asserts, “The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?” (Proverbs 18:14). In other words, your body can bear illness to a certain extent, but you stand little chance if your mind has given up on getting healed.

The spirit, or mind in this case, is where the Spirit of God begins His work of influencing our thoughts and behaviour. When we allow the Holy Spirit to imbue our thoughts, we tend to look at life with hope, faith, and optimism. Thus, we are able to overcome depression, negative thoughts, and illnesses in the process.

Your mental health matters because it affects all other areas of your life. Researchers estimate that one out of two people globally will develop a mental ailment in their lifetime. To remain in charge of your mental and other faculties, therefore, submit yourself to the control of the Almighty God. Allow Him to take over your worries and give you the peace that defies understanding.

Prayer
Almighty God, teach me how to give my burdens to you in order to experience peace of mind and optimal body health.
