For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers.
2 Timothy 4:3 (NKJV)
Many years ago, I used to listen keenly to a popular American televangelist. His content was encouraging. I would hang on to every statement. His charisma and ability to motivate his hearers were his forte, hence the mammoth crowds in his church.
Playing in the Gallery
With time, though, I started doubting his messages. Never once did I hear him condemn sin. He also appeared to deliberately avoid mentioning Satan by name. Instead, his sermons were more motivational talks than well-balanced messages to the people of God.
I realized that he was playing to the gallery. He delivered sermons that his hearers wanted. They, in turn, gave generously to his ministry. Indeed, he is one of the richest preachers on earth. Thousands of people still attend his church and participate in various services.
They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine
My experience with this preacher came to mind today when I read this worrying prophecy: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3–4).
Is it possible that the gospel truth has become so unpalatable that people prefer soothing teachings that condone sin and worldliness? If this televangelist started teaching more about righteous living and less about prosperity and materialism, would his physical church and social media platforms continue to be popular?
When the Truth is Too Bitter to Swallow
Is my choice of a church minister and congregation motivated by a desire for sound doctrine, or do I want to listen to sermons that do not condemn my ungodly lifestyle? When the truth is too bitter to swallow, do I accept my weaknesses and surrender to God, or do I choose the teachers who will preach what I want to hear?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to stop running away from the truth and allow You to transform me instead of finding a cheaper and more tolerant gospel.
