Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:12 (NKJV)
Jesus is with His disciples on Mount Olives. They just had the last supper. Ahead of him is the crucifixion. Up to now, the disciples have not understood what lies ahead of their master, even though He has already indicated that one of them will betray Him.
I Will Never Be Made to Stumble
Jesus now attempts to impress upon the twelve the gravity of the impeding events. He tells them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me this night.” (Matthew 26:31). This statement startles the disciples. They begin to wonder what exactly will happen to Christ to force them to forsake Him.
Peter, in particular, is highly offended. For more than three years, he has shown his loyalty to Jesus. Why would Jesus doubt Peter’s fidelity? Peter tells Jesus, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.” (Matthew 26:33). Peter means what he says.
Take Heed, Lest You Fall
What follows is Jesus’ prediction that Peter will deny him three times that night. That night unfolds exactly as the Lord stated. All the disciples forsake him. Peter later follows Jesus from a distance into the judgment hall and ends up denying the Lord three times.
It is as if Apostle Paul was writing about Peter when he stated, “Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Peter was overconfident, and Satan took advantage of him. The overenthusiastic apostle trusted in his own abilities and wisdom to fight spiritual battles.
The Danger of Spiritual Overconfidence
Peter’s experience is a lesson for all Christians. We must never trust in ourselves to defeat sin and the devil. The danger of overconfidence is that it exposes us to Satan’s attack. Without Jesus, the most ‘righteous’ Christian will fall like a house of cards when temptations arise. Only by trusting fully in Jesus and allowing His strength to cover our weaknesses do we become victors.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, because without you I am nothing, hold my hand and lead me to victory.
