He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD requires of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Micah 6:8 (KJV)
Mighty fortress. Mighty King. The Desire of all nations and the Sovereign of the universe, let me walk with thee. This is the prayer that every Christian ought to pray in his or her heart daily. The Lord God, our salvation, should be our daily companion and our closest friend.
Enoch was a man of faith. He became a friend of God. He walked with his Maker. One day, God visited him. They walked together as usual. Their conversation must have been enriching and intimate. Enoch could not go back to his earthly home. He went to heaven with God, instead.
One thing is clear: Enoch and God walked together because they had agreed to do so (Amos 3:3). Walking with God means having a close, intimate relationship with Him. Abraham was another close friend of God. He may not have been taken to heaven while alive, but he and God were buddies.
I once read a story of a man who would begin his prayer with the following greeting: “Good morning, God.” Such was the closeness of this man to God that he considered his Maker his intimate friend. Can the same be said of you? Is God your best friend? Are you walking with God daily?
Practice lifting your heart to God in prayer at any time. Fill your mind with heavenly thoughts. Let your heart be the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Lift up your voice to God in prayer in the morning. May your day end on a note of gratitude and praise for God. Let God remain your friend. And while you are at it, may this be your song and prayer: “O let me walk with thee, my God.”
What two actions can you take today to enrich your walk with God? Pray that God will give you all you need to follow through on your decision. Find time today to read and reflect on a Bible character whose walk with God you admire. By the grace of God, commit to implementing in your life the lessons you will learn.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I want to walk with You. Teach me how to appreciate Your friendship. Like Enoch, I want to be Your forever friend.
