Daily Devotional – Monday, April 17, 2023
There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.

When Moses sent out twelve spies to the Promised Land, there was optimism in the Israelite camp. Because the Lord had already promised them a land full of milk and honey, the outcome of the espionage mission was almost obvious. Many expected a confirmation that the land was ready for occupation.
We Were Like Grasshoppers
When the spies returned, though, the story was different. Of the twelve, only two had a positive report. The rest ignored the advantages of Canaan and concentrated on its few drawbacks. Here is an excerpt from their report: “There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:33).
It is true that the fearful giants were in Canaan, and their height and valor were intimidating. However, this was only a façade that obscured the treasures and blessings of the Promised Land. The ten spies felt inferior to the sons of Anak. They were ready to relinquish their rights to the inheritance their fathers had bequeathed to them.
Beware of Facades
That is how the devil works. He knows God has promised us eternal life and blessings in this life. Satan, therefore, presents smokescreens to distract us. To begin with, he depicts righteous living as being too difficult to achieve because it demands self-sacrifice. He then attempts to convince us that even eternal life is not guaranteed; thus we should enjoy the life we have now without any restraints.
Beware of facades. Do not allow current negative circumstances to dissuade you from your walk with God. Even when people and situations make you feel inadequate, like a grasshopper before a giant, remember that God is with you and He keeps His promises. Walk past the smokescreens today and go for what God has set before you.

Heavenly Father, empower me to go past the facades before me and achieve the purpose you have for me.
