For the love of Christ constraineth us…
2 Corinthians 5:14 (KJV)
I remember, during my college years, walking past a petrol station that had this slogan: “What drives you?”. At first, the catchphrase appeared to be just one of those clever marketing strategies. Indeed, it was!
My curious mind, however, could not rest easy. I got thinking about what actually drove me, so to speak. What was the motivation behind my thoughts, words, and actions? As a follower of Christ, did Christ ‘drive me’?
Think of all the roles you play in society. People may not read your thoughts, but they can draw some logical conclusions about your motives from your actions. As a father, mother, guardian, child, student, worker, leader, neighbor, and so on, can people conclude that the love of Christ’s love controls you?
In our acts of generosity towards others, what drives us? Is it the selfish desire to be seen and praised? Do we demand the glory that belongs to Christ? If you were dragged before a court of law, accused of being a Christian, would you be found guilty or innocent? Would the judge conclude that the indwelling love of God drives you in all your actions?
Pray that, as individuals and families, we will be motivated primarily by God in our conduct and in acts of generosity towards others. In addition, ask God to give you the attitude of John the Baptist—that you will ‘decrease’ as Christ ‘increases’.
Prayer
Loving Lord, may you fill us with your Holy Spirit so that in our thoughts, words, and actions, it will be evident that we are motivated by your love. May we decrease as you increase.
