Arise and Eat! The Journey is Long

Daily Devotional, Friday January 8, 2021

And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.

1 Kings 19:7 (KJV)

Fresh from killing the prophets of Baal and reestablishing the worship of Yahweh in Israel, Elijah faced the wrath of wicked Queen Jezebel. The prophet forgot the triumph at Mt. Carmel. He fled to the wilderness.

Elijah focused so much on his fears that he forgot to eat. God knew His child needed nourishment to reach Mt. Horeb, a journey of forty days. The angel of God twice wakened Elijah from his slumber, saying, “Arise and eat!”

Elijah’s experience mirrors that of many Christians. Often, spiritual victory is followed by periods of trials and despair, during which we forget to nurture our souls. In times of doubt, many consider the Word of God as unnecessary. When prayers are not answered immediately and in the manner we expect, we sometimes begin to doubt God.

That is the moment we need to hear God’s voice saying, “Arise and eat” spiritual food. If there is a time we need to connect with God more, it is when our faith is under attack following spiritual triumph. In 1 Corinthians 10:12, Paul admonishes, “…if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!”

However, if it happens that the devil takes us the down the road of despair, we should never forget to rise up and eat. Christians must feed on the Word of God regularly.  Are you spiritually well-fed or malnourished? Never forget to take your daily dose of the Living Word.

Take Action

  1. Create a schedule for reading the Bible once every year. You can find free 1-year Bible Reading Plans on the internet.
  2. Create a quiet time for reading the Bible and praying every morning, or in the evening, if that’s the best time for you.

Prayer

Father, many times I find myself starved of spiritual food because I allow fear and despair to overwhelm me. Help me to listen keenly and hear your voice reminding me to ‘arise and eat’ spiritual food. Amen

Indeed, spiritual nourishment is as important as the physical one. Thank you.
