He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
Luke 11:23 (NKJV)
The term ‘grey area’ has connotations of indecisiveness, apathy, and shadiness. It means one is unable or unwilling to make a decision for or against a certain course. Indeed, it is more preferable to be in a black or white zone than to be in the middle.
No Middle Ground
At a spiritual level, too, gray areas are undesirable. When He was one earth, Christ pursued a largely unpopular course. Not many people wanted to be identified with Him and to leave according to His teachings. He, together with his disciples, became objects of ridicule and criticism.
For example, there was a day he cast a demon on a mute person, but his detractors claimed he was using demonic powers to exorcise demons. In concluding His response, the Lord stated, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.” (Luke 11:23).
No Grey Areas
The more He was attacked, the more His disciples needed to cast their lot with Him. There was no room for indecisiveness. They must not identify themselves as His followers. If the disciple’s sympathies lay with the enemies of Jesus but they still followed the Lord, they were not truly His followers.
The call to the first disciples is the same one we have received. We cannot say we are Christians, but we refuse to surrender our lives fully to Jesus. The heart cannot be divided between Jesus and Satan. We cannot be at ungodly parties at night and sing praises to God the following morning. If we are not actively on Christ’s side, we are with the devil. There is no middle ground.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, strengthen my faith and help me to be loyal to You always.
