Who Could Stand?

Daily Devotional – Sunday, January 7, 2024
If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
Psalms 130:3 (NKJV)

The ageing American was arguing with Australian immigration agents. He was in the process of being deported back home. In an anguished voice, he asked, “What was the need for paying for my crimes if I still suffer for them every day?”

If God Should Mark Sins

This man had been jailed for three decades for sexual offenses. In prison, he had reformed. For ten years as a free man, he had not committed any crime. However, his name was inscribed in a register for sexual offenders. He could no longer move and operate as he used to before he went into prison. His criminal past would hang on his neck until his death.

The God of the Psalmist is different from the government of this reformed prisoner. That is why this songwriter exclaims, “If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” (Psalms 130:3). Take a moment to meditate on these words.

Who Could Stand?

If God kept a record of your sins, how confident would you be to stand before Him? If He never forgave sin, how long would your record be? How comfortable would you be if God shared with the public your list of public and private sins?

Now you can appreciate what the psalmist says next. “But there is forgiveness with You,
that You may be feared.” (Psalms 130:4). We worship God with joy because he forgives and forgets. While we deserve to be on a permanent register for sin, we walk freely as if we never sinned. O how great debtors we are to God’s grace!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, because you don’t keep a record of my sins and you forgive and forget, I can stand before you. Thank You.

We are lucky,God does not mark our sins, Just like the American could not be able to be free from his past, he could not take back the damage done so we could have been without God’s forgiveness.
But Our merciful God says, He will remember our sins no more. Hebrews 8:12
