Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
1 Chronicles 16:34 (NKJV)
When a child was asked to pray in church, he said, “Thank you, God.” Then there was awkward silence as we waited for the ‘meat’ of the prayer. Not long after, the little shaky voice muttered, ‘Amen.” The congregation reciprocated with a loud “Amen.” The person moderating the program stated that the prayer was complete.
A Prayer of Gratitude
I believe the child would have wanted to tell God much more than the gratitude he uttered. Perhaps he wanted to pray for himself, his family, or the church. It is likely that God let the boy utter the three words for the sake of us adults. I am not sure I have ever prayed using three words and, even then, offered only gratitude to God.
How sweet the boy’s prayer must have been to God! The Almighty is used to hearing long petitions that comprise the wants of human beings. In our quest to lead good lives, we think that we must spend a lot of time outlining and explaining our needs. We fail to realize that this is the same God who says He knows our needs even before we ask.
Give Thanks to the Lord
David understood just how important it was to praise and thank God. When he finally brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, he composed a beautiful song in which he stated, “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!” (1 Chronicles 16:34). This psalm is purely for ascribing glory, honor, and gratitude to God, not asking for material blessings.
Practice surprising God with ‘thank you’ prayers every now and then.
