Cease from anger and forsake wrath. Do not fret—it only causes harm.
Psalms 37:8 (NKJV)
I watched a Facebook post in which a professed psychologist claimed that people prone to anger are at a higher risk of contracting terminal diseases than those who control their fury. While I have no professional training in that area, I concur that rage has negative effects on health.
Forsake Wrath
The post reminded me of a story about a woman who had chronic skin rashes that no doctor or medicine could treat. However, when she sought the help of a church minister, she realized her health challenge was related to her bouts of anger. As soon as she resolved a long-running conflict with family members, the rashes disappeared.
One of the outstanding Bible verses in relation to anger states, “Cease from anger and forsake wrath. Do not fret—it only causes harm.” (Psalms 37:8). One danger of anger is that it corrodes the vessel it is stored in, hence the warning to abstain from it.
Cease from Anger
The younger we get, the more likely we are to hurt others and ourselves. In such moments, we utter words we may live to regret. We may even find ourselves inflicting physical harm on the objects of our wrath. Prisons are full of people who could not control their fury. Similarly, broken homes abound as a result of unfettered wrath.
Considering there are numerous anger triggers, how can we forsake wrath? We should present the issues that trouble us to God through prayer. Then “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7). To cease from anger and the attendant consequences, invite Jesus into your heart today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, fill me with your unfathomable peace so that I may forsake wrath and the harm it causes.
