Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in the power of your hand to do so.
Proverbs 3:27 (NKJV)
A hilarious social media post asserted that a man can die of starvation, but those who come to mourn him will have food in abundance. The irony in this message was buttressed by another post where someone was asking people to buy flowers for him while he was alive instead of doing so during his funeral.
Do Good When You Can
Indeed, it is strange how we celebrate people when they die while neglecting them when they were alive. Solomon had the following to say about this issue: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in the power of your hand to do so. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go and come back, and tomorrow I will give it” to you when you have it with you.” (Proverbs 3:27-28).
Opportunities to do good to others abound. If you have the means, buy food for that family; pay bills for the needy; visit a home for destitute children; and make your parents’ retirement days enjoyable. If someone comes to you with a need you can meet, do not postpone charity. Do it immediately. It is possible that you are the only hope that person has.
Do Not Withhold Good
Tomorrow may never come. Today is your opportunity to extend kindness to others. Do not wait until it is too late to demonstrate love to those to whom it is due. If you did not give flowers to a person when he or she was alive, your funeral bouquet is not necessary. Do good when it is in your power to do so.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me to do good to others when I am in a position to do so.
