A Costly Blunder

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, January 16, 2024
I am the LORD, that is My name and My glory I will not give to another…
Isaiah 42:8 (NKJV)

Following an acute shortage of water in the Wilderness of Zin, God instructs Moses and Aaron, “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water. Thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock and give drink to the congregation and their animals” (Numbers 20:8).

A Dear Mistake

God’s directives are simple and clear, but Moses and Aaron commit a costly blunder. Scripture records: ““Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.”” (Numbers 20:10-11).

The error is two-fold. First, Moses strikes the rock instead of speaking to it. Second, insinuating the two are the ones responsible for bringing water out of the rock. God summarizes these leaders’ error when He says, “I am the LORD; that is My name and My glory I will not give to another.” (Isaiah 42:8). Because of this dear mistake, the brothers will not enter Canaan.

A Costly Blunder

How often are we guilty of the same mistake? For example, when we help people using the resources God has given us, we want to bask in glory. When people praise us for doing what we should be doing, we forget to attribute glory to God. We also idolize some of our leaders in both the secular and religious realms, placing them above God in our lives.

Whenever we lift ourselves above God or treat other people as if they have the power that belongs to God alone, we commit a costly blunder. We must always remember that whatever we own or achieve is courtesy of God, and all glory and honor must ascend to Him.

Prayer
Almighty God, always remind me that You deserve all glory and honor for every human achievement.
