Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
1 Corinthians 13:1 (NKJV)
From the outside, churches look attractive. Believers spend massive resources to construct beautiful edifices. Inside these sanctuaries, you will find expensive furniture and equipment. Modern technology is used to project sermons and songs.
What is Important?
In addition, preachers take to the podium every weekend to deliver powerful sermons, often laden with humor and jest. Choirs that ooze modernity ensure church members are refreshed through beautiful sacred music. In some cases, there is song and dance during services. These and other issues sometimes attract non-believers to church.
Now, let us flip the coin. In these congregations, jealousy, hatred, anger, bitterness, pride, and unbridled competition abound. Some believers do not see eye-to-eye. The desire to outshine one another is paramount. Often, personal and group differences escalate into open conflicts and fist fights.
Greater Significance
The loud music and fiery sermons becloud the underlying lack of love and kindness. Believers concentrate more on rituals than values. Church attendance becomes a formality devoid of meaning and spiritual growth. Church leaders take the place of Christ in the minds of believers.
Thus, Paul’s message to the Corinthians has the same or even greater significance to the modern church: “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 13:1).
What Really Matters?
It does not matter how magnificent our churches are, how faithfully we offer, or how powerful our sermons are if we have no love amongst us. We may have the best teachings, but if we cannot love, forgive, and be kind to others; we are far from the kingdom of God. What really matters is love.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, take me back to the basics of your kingdom and teach me to practice genuine love once again.
