And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.
John 12:32 (NKJV)
The children of Jacob were complaining against God and Moses. God was not happy. He sent fiery serpents that killed many Israelites. The people cried to God while admitting they had sinned against the Almighty. In His mercy, God told Moses to make a fiery bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Anyone who looked at the bronze serpent would be healed of snake venom.
If I Am Lifted Up
Thousands of years later, Jesus told His disciples, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32). Christ was referring to his impending death on the cross. Moreover, he was alluding, to a certain degree, to what had happened in the wilderness and the role Moses had played.
For the suffering Israelites to avoid death, they had to look up to the bronze serpent Moses had lifted. Similarly, salvation is a product of admitting we are sinners and believing in the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross. Once you do this, you now assume the role of Moses in relation to other human beings.
Lift Him Up!
The greatest job Jesus has given us is to lift Him up. In our lives, sermons, witnessing, music, and so on, we are to point people to the Savior. Around us are people whom the serpent of Eden is biting and threatening to kill eternally. We must tell these people that Jesus died for them and will save them if they believe in Him.
Notice that when we lift Jesus up, He draws all people to Himself. We have no power to save. We do not have the right or power to decide who will or will not get saved. If at first we do not succeed in convincing people to believe in Jesus, remember that your task is simple: to point them to Jesus. What are you doing to lift Jesus up today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, empower me to lift You up in word and deed so that You may draw many to You and save them.
