Wishes vs. Reality

Daily Devotional – Friday, January 26, 2024
In the world, you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 (NKJV)

The televangelist was waxing lyrical. He was at the climax of his sermon on how God blesses His faithful people. The man of the cloth claimed that believers will always have happiness, peace, and material wealth. Further, only those who had no faith suffered illnesses, joblessness, accidents, and other misfortunes.

You Will Have Tribulation

Consequently, believers must demonstrate faith in God by planting a seed, which is a call to sacrifice a substantial amount of money for God’s work. From the faces of the congregants, it was evident the message was home. I imagined people blaming themselves fully for any adversities they were undergoing and deciding to appease God through monetary gifts.

The idea of Christians having a trouble-free life on earth is a wish that defies reality. This fallacy goes against the teachings of Jesus, who proclaimed, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).

Wishes vs. Reality

Jesus knows that an unrighteous world will be uncomfortable with the righteous. As long as we condemn the sin in the world through holy living, we will not have peace. That is why Christ promised us peace to help us endure tribulation. While God will ensure we lack no good things, He will allow us to undergo suffering because that is how we develop godly character.

While we wish that the people around us (including fellow believers) would treat us with kindness and respect, we must be ready to face betrayal, harassment, insults, physical abuse, and even death for the sake of the gospel. As long as we are in the world, we will not be immune to sickness, pain, and loss. Our hope, however, lies in Jesus Christ, because He has overcome the world and will put an end to misfortune when He returns soon.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you because, though I will go through tribulation, You will fill me with your peace and make me a victor like You.
