How Long Do You Want to Live?

Daily Devotional – Monday, February 5, 2024
And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.
Revelation 20:4 (NKJV)

How long do you want to live? Moses taught that a human being has a lifespan of seventy years, although the strong ones can have an additional ten years, most of which are full of labor and sorrow (read Psalms 90:10).

Mixed Reactions to Long Life

Well, the majority of earthlings want to live for as many years as possible. We invest in the best medical care, nutrition, and exercise to maximize our time on earth. In the modern era, some human beings have crossed the century mark, thus motivating others to try.

Ironically, I once heard a retiree say he preferred to die early because he did not want to become a burden to his family in old age. Moreover, two decades ago, I knew a woman who was approaching one hundred years of age and who would cry to God to let her die.

They Lived and Reigned for a Thousand Years

In other words, while some people want to live long in spite of hardships, others desire to die to avoid the same privations. This implies that if there was a guarantee that we could live long but happy lives devoid of death, all of us would most likely accept the offer.

Now, did you know that such a life exists? While describing the outcome of God’s judgment for the saints, John the Revelator stated, “And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.” (Revelation 20:4). Yes, a millennium of joyful living is coming—an entire 1,000 years, not just 70, 80, or 100 years. This will be like the first installment of eternity!

How Long do You Want To Live?

How long do you want to live on earth? Well, you have no control over that decision, but you can resolve today to enjoy the millennium that is waiting for us in heaven. After Christ returns to take His faithful to heaven and before He recreates the earth, it will be our privilege to spend a very long time with angels, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and God the Father. You don’t want to miss the party!

Prayer
Lord Jesus, as I strive, by your grace, to lead a productive and righteous but ephemeral existence, always remind me of the millennium that is awaiting me in heaven, in your presence.
