When Joy Becomes Your Permanent Attitude

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice!
Philippians 4:4 (NKJV)

If at any moment you feel sad and unmotivated, read Philippians Chapter 4. The entire chapter is full of ‘quotable quotes’, as some would put it. One of the most memorable of these is a command for us to be joyful.

It is easy to dismiss Paul’s call to Christians to rejoice on the assumption that the Apostle was protected and provided for by God at all times. Well, when you review Paul’s experiences, you will wonder why he even talked about rejoicing.

In Acts 16, Paul and Silas were preaching in the city of Philippi. Their message antagonized some influential businesspeople. The men of God were then arrested, beaten mercilessly, and imprisoned. However, instead of complaining about their suffering, they chose to praise God through hymns.

What followed was an earthquake, loose shackles, and open prison doors. The jailer, sensing the power of God in the happenings and amazed at the calmness of the two under persecution, surrendered his life to Jesus. Indeed, the jailer’s household accepted Jesus, too.

In other words, when Paul writes to the Christians in Philippi to always rejoice, they know he means what he says. When they compare their sufferings with Paul’s, they know they have more reasons to be joyful in the Lord.

Joy is one of the ‘nutrients’ of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatian 5:22–23). Paul rejoices despite his trials because he is filled with the Spirit. In Philippians 4:10–13, Paul writes that he had learned to be content in every situation he faced, hence his attitude of joy.

You, too, can adopt the same attitude by allowing the Holy Spirit to work within you. An attitude of gratitude and contentment will make you rejoice in the Lord continuously. You will rejoice, not because everything is working well in your life, but because you know God is in control.

Once again, rejoice in the Lord always, and again, I say rejoice!

Prayer
Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit and flood my life with continuous joy. Amen.
