Are You a Lifesaver?

Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back…
James 5:19 (NKJV)

If you have ever wondered about God, you understand how terrible it feels. While outwardly you appear happy, deep inside, you know you are unhappy. You long to go back to the fold, but your pride and fear of embarrassment keep you away.

Save a Soul from Death

Now, imagine this. A former colleague in church goes after you. She prays for you in public and in private. She tries to woo you back to Christ. Through her, you start hearing the voice of God inviting you back home. With time, you overcome your fears and pride and rejoin the body of Christ. You will forever be indebted to this caring friend.

That is the kind of scenario James envisions as he concludes his epistle. He states, “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.” (James 5:19-20).

Are You a Lifesaver?

Sin separates us from God. A soul that departs from God is on the highway to death. God wants us to be lifesavers by going after the wayward believer. Heaven is delighted when we refuse to rest until our wounded brothers and sisters return. In contrast, we sadden God when we are indifferent to such people or push them farther away through gossip.

Are you a lifesaver for Christ? Are there people who have wondered about the truth whom you need to bring back to Jesus? Which actions will you take today to save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins?

Dear Jesus, inculcate in me the desire to go after Your wayward children and bring them back to Your kingdom.
