As Patient as a Farmer

Daily Devotional – Saturday, February 10, 2024
Therefore, be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.
James 5:7 (NKJV)

Two days ago, I decided to inspect my garden to see how the maize crop was doing. I cannot wait to roast the cobs. It has been almost four months of waiting. I remember preparing the land, planting the seed, and weeding despite a busy office schedule.

Be Patient

In a few weeks’ time, I will be enjoying the fruits of my labor, but it has taken a lot of resources, work, and waiting. Patience has been the most pervasive virtue during this time. You cannot claim to be a good farmer yet look for quick fixes. You must do your part and trust God to provide sunshine, rain, and other elements necessary for a good harvest.

While borrowing from the farmer’s example, James states, “Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:7-8).

As Patient as a Farmer

Like a farmer, we must continue working in the Lord’s vineyard as we wait for Him to return. There, we will learn to be patient with human beings the same way He is longsuffering with us. Moreover, we will realize that we can do nothing without God, for He is the one who gives us the necessary conditions for success.

The best strategy for waiting for the Lord is to cooperate with Him in the salvation of human beings, and this requires a lot of endurance. In the process, we will develop godly character. We will establish our hearts as we wait for the blessed hope of Christ’s return. Be as patient as the farmer. Work as you wait.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me the patience of a farmer as I wait for Your Second Advent.
