Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.
Psalm 50:15 (NKJV)
Edgar Harrel’s life changed forever after a World War II event. He became a man of unrelenting commitment to God. His lips forever recount the faithfulness of God. Edgar’s experience demonstrates the meaning of Psalm 50:15.
Shortly after midnight on July 30, 1945, a Japanese submarine torpedoed and sunk the USS Indianapolis. What followed were four days of massive deaths from hypothermia, dehydration, salt-water delusions and vicious shark attacks.
Edgar was among the 316 sailors (from 1,195) who were rescued on the fourth day. However, the memory of men dying around him still lingers. He can still hear the screams of fellow soldiers being devoured by Tiger sharks.
More importantly, Edgar acknowledges that only by God’s grace did he survive the ordeal. Whenever he remembers this harrowing experience, he ascribes all glory to God for coming out alive.
Today, reflect on the many times God has saved you from risky and painful situations. Remember how you desperately cried to Him for help. Relieve the moment when He answered your prayer and joy filled your heart. Did you remember to praise Him?
All God asks for after answering your prayers is praise and glory to His name. Witnessing about God’s miracles and goodness in your life will encourage others to trust in the Almighty, too. Do not deny God the praise and honour that belongs to Him only.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the many times You answered my desperate prayers, but I failed to give glory to You.
