You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?
Matthew 5:13 (NIV)
Elijah has been transported to heaven in chariots and horses of fire. Elisha, the successor, faces several challenges. One of these is the quality of water in the City of Jericho. How will he deal with this problem?
In 2 Kings 2:19, Elisha is told, “Please notice, the situation of this city is pleasant … but the water is bad, and the ground barren.” (NKJV). Like many of our families and societies, the outward appearance is perfect but there are critical underlying problems.
Elisha replies, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” 2 Kings 2:20 (ESV). When Elisha throws the salt into the bitter water, healing takes place (21). This is comparable to Matthew 5:13, where Christ calls us the salt of the earth – God’s agents for healing and transformation of the society.
Christ warns that we must not lose the flavouring and preserving quality of the grace we receive from Him. Moreover, just as salt must mix with other items (without losing its saltness), we need to interact with those who do not know Christ and influence them to accept salvation.
Are you still the salt of the earth? Do you bring life, energy and joy to those you interact with? Are you a positive presence in the places where you spend your time? Can the people who know you well testify that you make life tastier for them?
Recommit yourself to God. Allow Jesus to use you to bring joy and positive energy in the life of another person today.
Father
Father, make me an agent of healing, transformation and joy in my family and society. Amen.
Amen Maina Kabui
Hallelujah, bro.
