Give us this day our daily bread.
Matthew 6:11 (NKJV)
Thomas Carlyle once said, “Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance but to do what lies clearly at hand.” I came across this statement at a time when I was grappling with formidable challenges. I was worried about some upcoming issues.
Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread
On reflection, I realized that whenever I worry about the future or the past, it is my present that suffers. While concentrating on what lies dimly ahead, I neglect what lies clearly at hand, yet this is the only aspect of my life I have control over.
Thankfully, as I recite the Lord’s prayer, I come across an interesting statement that reminds me to focus on what matters: today. Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11).
Unburden Today
Yesterday’s bread is rotting and unpalatable. Tomorrow’s loaf is probably in the oven. What I need is today’s bread. Worrying about my past mistakes and missed opportunities will not change anything. I must pick up the lessons and move on because the past is not a good place to live. Similarly, why should I worry about a future I have not reached?
In the words of Sir William Oliver, “The load of tomorrow, added to that of yesterday, carried today, makes the strongest falter.” Today has its own share of challenges. Why add yesterday’s and tomorrow’s imaginary burdens to it? Indeed, as Christ asserted, “Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34).
Focus on Today
Focus on today. Submit your plans to God and allow Him to take care of your needs. Plan for tomorrow, but let the One who sees tomorrow arrange everything for you. Enjoy the present and make the most of it because God has assured you that He will supply your daily bread.
Prayer
Help me leave the past where it is and leave the future to you while focusing on today.

God help me to leave one day at a time. Help me not to be a prisoner of my past or yesterday or anxious about my tomorrow but just give me the strength today to that which I have to do. So lord for my sake, teach me to take one day at a time. Amen!
Amen, Elder. God bless you.
