Shun Stupid Arguments

Daily Devotional – Friday, March 8, 2024
But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law, for they are unprofitable and useless.
Titus 3:9 (NKJV)

I used to love public lectures between Christians and Muslims until I realized they were fundamentally flawed. The Christian would quote the Quran in places where it appeared to support his beliefs. On the other hand, the Muslim would cite the Bible out of context to fit his point of view. Incidentally, neither of the two parties demonstrated a willingness to listen to or appreciate the other’s point of view.

Abstain from Foolish Debates

The city of Crete in ancient Greece is likely to have had such heated and contentious debates. The Greeks had a penchant for arguments. It is no wonder that they produced some of the best-known philosophers. However, Paul warned the young gospel minister, Titus, against such verbal exchanges.

The apostle warned, “But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.” (Titus 3:9). You have probably come across such disputes on social media and wondered whether they add value to the body of Christ.

Shun Stupid Arguments

When Christ is not at the centre of a discussion, people tend to engage in personal and sect-based conflicts. They strive to demonstrate who is better versed in scripture. Unfortunately, because the spirit of God is not in control, none of those involved in such quarrels benefit spiritually.

The next time you find yourself in a discussion on religious matters, ask yourself whether the discussion is profitable or useful. If it entails peddling lies and ridiculing and disrespecting others, it is not worth participating in. If God is not the centre of the discussion, avoid foolish disputes.

Prayer
Almighty God, help avoid foolish disputes because they do not bring glory to Your Name.
