Focus on What Matters

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Colossians 3:2 (NKJV)

Satan is the master of distractions. He loves taking our focus from God. The evil one uses trials and persecutions to convince us that God does not love us. Alternatively, he makes us concentrate on our problems instead of God’s ability and willingness to help us.

Concentrate on Important Issues

Distractions also come in the form of the cares of this life. While there is nothing wrong with making a living, there is a risk of making it our obsession. Whereas the poor struggle to place food on the table, the rich go after more and more money.

Another source of distraction is carnality. While Christ bought us from sin with His precious blood, it is possible to gradually revert to a life of rebelliousness. That happens when we divert our attention from the purity of Christ to the contamination of sin.

Seek Those Things That Are Above

The apostle Paul, knowing that the Colossians were in danger of losing focus, exhorted them: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2).

Whatever we set our thoughts on grows. If we concentrate on the pleasure of sin around us, the troubles surrounding us, or the cares of this life, they will become more important than anything and anyone else, including God.

Focus on What matters.

Conversely, if we focus on what matters most, and that is Jesus and His power to meet our spiritual and material needs, everything else will fade as the presence of God inundates us. Everything begins in our minds, hence the need to surrender ourselves to the control of God. What will you set your mind to today?

Lord Jesus, today I choose to focus on what matters most, and that is You.
