The Antidote to Jealousy

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy.
1 Corinthians 13:4 (NKJV)

A common human emotion, jealousy, frequently results from insecurity and comparison. It can quietly seep into our hearts and lead to conflict, resentment, and unhappiness. If we are not firmly rooted in the reality of God’s love for us, jealousy can quickly thrive in our hearts.

The Cure for Envy

The Bible forbids us from being envious. Envy produces animosity against those who have more and discontent with what we already have. In contrast, love does not envy (1 Corinthians 13:4). Rather, love celebrates and is gladdened by the blessings of others.

We need to appreciate and accept God’s love for us in order to get over our envy. This gives us confidence and fulfilment in the identity we have in Christ. We no longer feel the need to measure ourselves against other people because we understand that God’s unwavering love, not material possessions, determines our value.

The Antidote to Jealousy

In addition, when our relationship with Christ deepens, His Spirit transforms our hearts and thoughts. He swaps out comparison for satisfaction, uneasiness for confidence, and envy for love. Instead of viewing people with jealousy or animosity, He teaches us to view them through His eyes, with empathy and compassion.

God’s love is the antidote for jealousy. So let us look to Jesus, the founder and finisher of our faith. Let us stay in His love and let it work on us to make us into loving, joyful, peaceful vessels. We will be set free from envy and the ensuing resentment and fury as we walk in the light of His love.
