What a Daring Request!

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed…”
1 Chronicles 4:10 (NKJV)

What a daring request Jabez made to God! He demanded something that many Christians would shy away from. His prayer demonstrates the need to approach God in faith and to believe in His goodness and willingness to answer our prayers.

Oh, that You Would Bless Me Indeed

Part of Jabez’s prayer went like this: “Oh, that You would bless me indeed…” (1 Chronicles 4:10). Considering his disadvantageous background, Jabez might have felt he really needed abundant blessings in his life. He refused to have a mediocre life. Moreover, this attitude could only emanate from a person who had total confidence in the ability and faithfulness of God.

Jabez knew that nothing is impossible with God, and God rewards those who approach Him in faith. In contrast, despite serving the God who owns the universe, we are often satisfied with average blessings. God desires that we make the highest demand of Him so that we may live productively and become a blessing to other people.

What a Daring Request!

Take a moment to reflect on your life. Can you say with confidence that God has indeed blessed you? If not, is it possible that you are limiting God by not making a bold request like Jabez did? What are you daring God to do for you today?

We serve the God who promises, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10). “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16), for God is ready and willing to bless us according to His will.
