Why Do We Give?

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7 (NKJV)

Why do we give? Giving is a rich and colourful thread in the Christian religion. It is an expression of the great grace we have received from God, not just a duty. Giving is providing our time, talents, and resources with a heart tuned to God’s love. It goes beyond simply having material goods.

An Expression of Gratitude

When giving is based on a heart that has been changed by the gospel, it becomes a happy way to show thanks. We contribute out of a profound sense of gratitude for the inexhaustible blessings showered upon us, not to gain favor or recognition. We give because Jesus first gave His life to save us.

Giving also enables us to match our priorities with the values of God’s kingdom. It serves as a reminder that true fulfillment comes from investing in the lives of others rather than collecting stuff, shifting our attention from the transient to the eternal. We take part in God’s redeeming mission by being generous and giving hope to hearts that are hopeless.

Why Do We Give?

Giving isn’t always simple, though. That is why Paul reminds us, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7). We may contribute freely and abundantly because we know that our Heavenly Father delights in benefiting His joyful givers. Today, let us pause and ask ourselves, “Why Do We Give?”

Almighty Father, help me develop an unselfish heart that is based on love and appreciation for what You have done for me.
