How to Practice Fairness

Daily Devotional: Sunday, April 21, 2024
For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice; the upright will see His face.
Psalms 11:7 (NIV)

The idea of fairness is engrained in human nature. We are taught about fairness at home, in the classroom, and on the playground from an early age. Justice—the making of things right when they go wrong—is what we long for. However, in an unjust world, justice can often feel like an unattainable ideal.

God Loves Justice

However, as Christ’s followers, we put our faith in a God who is just as kind and fair as He is loving. God’s dedication to justice and to treating every individual equally and impartially is demonstrated throughout the Bible. God expects of Christians that they treat everyone fairly in both the Old and New Testaments.

This entails showing compassion and decency to everyone, irrespective of their background, race, or socioeconomic standing. It entails speaking out against injustice and defending the oppressed, even when doing so is inconvenient or unpopular.

How to Practice Fairness

However, justice is more than just how we treat other people. It also has to do with how we see ourselves, admitting our own prejudices and biases, and letting God change our hearts and thoughts. It requires us to honestly own up to our mistakes and ask for pardon and reconciliation.

Fairness is a reality in God’s kingdom, not merely a lofty ideal. It’s the assurance that justice will finally triumph and all wrongs will be righted. Until then, may we make an effort to live as upright and decent people, bringing God’s light to a world that sorely needs grace and justice. Let us always practice fairness, “For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice; the upright will see His face. (Psalms 11:7)

Prayer
Heavenly Father, please enable us to treat others with fairness in order to reflect your fair nature.
