Joy Comes in the Morning

Daily Devotional – Thursday, March 4, 2021

weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

Psalm 30:5 (NIV)

If I had an instrument to measure pain, toothache would rank high up the scale. I cannot forget one cold night when an extremely painful tooth kept me awake the whole night. I prayed unceasingly for daylight, when I would rush to the dentist for some relief.

Even when the affected tooth was pulled out, the next few nights brought anguish and free-flowing tears. In contrast, my pain would subside in the morning and I would enjoy the day.

That is why I understand David when he says, “weeping may stay for the night…”. This statement literally means that trouble can spend the night with you. Imagine sleeping next to calamity and experiencing its full intensity!

On several occasions, David had to spend the night hiding from enemies such as King Saul and his (David’s) rebellious sons. He rubbed shoulders with hardship, deprivation and death but survived them all.

However, David did not give up. He had learned, through experience, that, “ rejoicing comes in the morning.” Yes, even the darkest night will dawn. For a moment, it may seem as if God has forgotten you, but gradually, He answers your prayers.

Take heart, nights are not forever, as Charles Spurgeon once said. You may be going through the toughest of financial troubles. An illness may have troubled you for some time now. Perhaps you are looking for a job, and your hope is dwindling.

Take heart, your morning is coming. Keep praying. Keep working using what God has placed in your hands. Soon, your morning will arrive, and so will your abundant joy.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, when the night of hardship and uncertainty engulfs me, keep reminding me that my morning of rejoicing is coming.
