and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands

1 Thessalonians 4:11 (NIV)

A fundamental teaching of the Bible is that while we are not saved because of our good works, God expects us to reflect His character after we are saved.  The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), is the product of salvation.

Satan, however, wants us to live as if we never met Jesus.  He sets traps for us, making us indulge in seemingly innocent sins. Paul realized that such evils were prevalent in the church at Thessalonica, and gave advice that we, too, can benefit from.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:11, we read, “and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.” God urges us to pursue peace with others and avoid quarrels and fights. We should aspire to be agents of peace, not division, in our homes and societies.

In addition, to every Christian, the warning is given, “You should mind your own business.” Let us invest our energies into the work and vocations God has given us. That way, we will have no time to interfere with the affairs of other people.

Finally, as Christians, we are to “work with your hands…” Apparently, those days, there were numerous lazy Christians who hated manual labour. God’s promise is to bless the work of our hands (Deuteronomy 28:12). God and laziness are not compatible.

In conclusion, to lead a life that pleases God and gives you a good reputation, be a peacemaker, focus on your work and eat from your own sweat. These are three important ingredients of a godly life.

Lord Jesus, help me to reflect your character in everything I do.

A Christian living is simply for loving others. We must be responsible in all areas of life. Some of the Thessalonians Christians had adopted a life of idleness, depending on others for food. Some looked on manual labour. Paul told them to work hard and live quiet lives. Whatever you do, do it faithfully and be a positive force in the society.
