Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
Colossians 3:23 (NLT)
The best mason in the company was retiring. His boss asked for one last favour – the last and best house. The builder started working immediately. Everyone expected a masterpiece.
This time, however, the old man has a change of heart. He wanted to save a few more coins for his retirement. So, he bought low quality materials to cut down on costs. His workmanship was way below the expected standards.
He reasoned; Why not cheat this last time? Afterall, my boss trusts me so much, he will not realize.
Finally, the house was ready. “Here are the keys to the house,” he told the master. “No,” replied the boss “Keep the keys. That house is my retirement gift to you. Thank you for your many precious years of service.” What a sad moment. If only he had known the house would be his?
In Colossians 3:23, we are reminded, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” In other words, when you embark on any task, know that God is your employer and supervisor.
How different would you perform your duties and responsibilities if your employer was God? How would you manage time, money and other resources in your workplace? How would you relate to your workmates? What results would you deliver?
If Jesus were your boss, what would your attitude towards work be? Would you work grudgingly, while complaining, or you would work willingly, with a smile? If there are changes you need to make, start today.
Lord Jesus, please remind me, before and during every task, that you are my employer and supervisor.
Since the creation, God has given us work to do. If regard our work as an act of worship or service to God. Such an attitude would take some laziness and boredom out of it. We could work without complaining if we would treat our jobs problems as the cost of leadership.
Amen, Pastor.
