Why Meekness Matters

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, June 19, 2024
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5 (NKJV)

In a society that frequently exalts strength, confidence, and self-aggrandizement, the biblical value of meekness may appear unconventional. But meekness is a good quality, as Jesus reminds us in the Beatitudes, where he promises that the meek “will inherit the earth.” However, why does God value meekness so highly, and what does it mean to be meek?

The Perfect Example of Meekness

Though it is sometimes misinterpreted as weakness, meekness is actually strength in moderation. It entails tenderness, humility, and a readiness to yield to God’s will. A person who is humble is not easily agitated or arrogant. Rather, even under trying circumstances, they display calmness and forbearance.

The perfect example of meekness is Jesus. In Matthew 11:29, He states, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls”. Jesus lived a life characterized by humbly submitting to the will of the Father—even to the point of dying on a cross. His humility served as a potent example of the peace and strength that come from giving yourself over to God.

Why Meekness Matters

Find a situation in your life where you can be meeker. Maybe it is in your relationships, at work, or in the way you deal with conflict and stress. Make the deliberate decision to answer in a humble and kind manner, asking God to give you the strength to carry out your plan. Consider the effects this shift in strategy has on your relationships and your personal peace of mind.

Prayer
Give us the kindness to show others Your love and the humility to surrender to Your will.
