Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:3 (NKJV)
Jesus makes a profound first point in the Sermon on the Mount that contradicts how we traditionally think of benefits. He declares, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” What is meant by the phrase “poor in spirit”?
Being impoverished in spirit is a spiritual state in which we acknowledge our whole dependence on God, not a reference to actual poverty. It is a recognition of our spiritual destituteness in the absence of God’s grace.
Blessed are the Poor in Spirit
The humble in spirit come to God in humility. They realize that all they can give Him is their brokenness and their need for His mercy and kindness. Because of their humility, God is able to operate in their life and change them in ways that are best for Him.
Spiritually impoverished people don’t rely on their own might or resources; instead, they believe in God’s provision. They realize that material achievement and wealth cannot provide true contentment and satisfaction; only God can.
According to Jesus, the poor in spirit will receive eternal life and spiritual blessings that God bestows upon those who sincerely seek Him. Their reign is one of heavenly promises and divine presence, not of this world.
What it Means to be Poor in Spirit
Giving up our ego, independence, and sense of righteousness before God is a necessary part of being poor in spirit. It necessitates accepting on a daily basis that we depend on Him for direction and strength in all facets of our lives.
Thinking about this beatitude forces us to go inward. Are we coming to God as poor spiritual beings, confessing our sins and asking for His pardon and direction? Do we depend more on His strength than on our own? Remember, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Prayer
Almighty Father, O that You may make me poor in spirit!
