He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.
Psalm 103:10 (NKJV)
Which is the true definition of grace? Humans typically seek to uphold justice by rewarding virtue and punishing wickedness. But God’s justice is very different according to today’s important passage. We receive grace that we do not deserve, rather than the punishment we deserve.
We Don’t Deserve Forgiveness
In a world where fairness is usually viewed through the prism of deservingness and justice is frequently determined by retaliation, Psalm 103:10 provides a strikingly different viewpoint. God’s interactions with us are characterized by His incredible grace rather than by our shortcomings.
God’s attitude to us is not controlled by a rigid record of our transgressions, despite the fact that we are flawed beings with repercussions for our misdeeds. What if God truly dealt with us according to our transgressions? Without hope of salvation, we would be trapped in a sea of judgment.
The Real Definition of Grace
We should feel a great sense of appreciation when we realize that God has not treated us in accordance with our sins. With the knowledge that our shortcomings do not define who we are or how we relate to Him, let us accept the gift of grace, rather than languish in our guilt.
Now that we understand the depth of His grace, let us rely on His kindness and ask for His help to get back up when we stumble. In a same vein, let us extend the same grace and forgiveness to others as God has extended to us. The real definition of grace of God extending unfettered love and forgiveness to underserving, wayward human beings.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for not dealing with me according to my sins, but by your unfathomable grace.
