Blessed be the LORD my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle.
Psalms 144:1 (NKJV)
King David acknowledges God as his trainer, preparing him for the battles ahead, as well as his protection. The image of hands and fingers being prepared for battle alludes to the very real challenges that we face in life, whether they be mental, spiritual, or physical.
Who Trains My Hands For War
The opening line of David is “Blessed be the Lord, my Rock.” The word “rock” denotes assurance and steadiness. God continues to be our continuous haven in a world full of unknowns and difficulties. We have the ability to overcome any adversity when we put our trust in Him.
God does not abandon us to fend for ourselves, as the phrase “who trains my hands for war” emphasizes. Rather, He actively prepares us for the difficulties that lie ahead. Scripture, prayer, and even the circumstances we go through can provide this training.
Trained for Battle
Our conflicts are often with spiritual forces rather than with physical enemies. When we acknowledge this, we may see that part of God’s training is growing in our faith, expanding our comprehension of His Word, and fortifying our prayer life.
David starts his proclamation with a blessing. David shows us the value of giving thanks because he acknowledges God’s influence in his life. No matter the struggles we endure, we can begin each day by praising God for his holiness and goodness. Think for a moment about your own life. What struggles has God helped you overcome? Express your gratitude and admiration for His steadfastness.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, please assist me to put my faith in Your training, knowing that You have prepared me for life’s battles.
