Do You Have an Advocate?

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, October 8, 2024
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1 (NKJV)

In today’s key text, God communicates to us like a parent might. By referring to us as “little children,” through the Apostle John, the Lord reminds us of our status in God’s family. God desires that we “not sin,” yet he also recognizes that we are fallible human beings in need of an advocate.

Jesus, Our Defender

Sin frequently causes us to carry a heavy burden of guilt. The good news is that we are not left to manage our problems alone. Scripture gives us the reassurance that we have Jesus Christ as our advocate in case we falter. “Advocate” is a heavy word. It refers to someone who makes our case.

The fact that Jesus is our legal counsel is immensely comforting in a world that frequently condemns us. Not only does He know about our shortcomings, but He also actively seeks to help us by showing us sympathy and grace.

Do You Have an Advocate?

Do you have any habits, ideas, or behaviors that you would like to shed off? Offer them in prayer to God. Recognize your difficulties and accept Jesus to be your advocate because He genuinely cares about you and is aware of your troubles.

Take a few quiet moments to consider how consoling it is to have Jesus on your side. How does it feel to be a member of God’s family specifically for you? In your day-to-day life, how can you react to this reality?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I am happy to know that You are my advocate, pleading my case before the Father.
